چکیده

Callus cultures from root explants of Lathyrus sativus L. ‘Derek’ were tested for their morphogenic capacity. Primary explants (fragments of roots) were cultivated on three induction media. We obtained three lines of callus tissue among which we identified two non-embryogenic lines and one embryogenic line. Callus originally cultivated on modified MS medium supplemented with 0.05 mgL picloram, formed embryo-like structures upon transfer to media containing 0.1 mgL picloram or 0.9 mgL2,4-D. Histological examinations confirmed embryogenity of obtained structures. Previous studies had revealed that, notwithstanding efficient callus induction and proliferation, its capacity to differentiate shoots or somatic embryos is limited. Consequently, rhizogenesis was only form of complete organogenesis obtained in our experiments. However attempts to develop the methods for indirect plant regeneration in L. sativus would allow creation of new genetic variations required to improvement of this species.

Mutagenesis as a tool for improvement of traits in grasspea (Lathyrus sativus L.)

Introduction Grasspea (Lathyrus sativus L.) is produced as major crop in Bangladesh, China, India and Pakistan, and to a lesser extent in many countries of Europe, the Middle East, northern Africa, as well as in South America. It is extensively cultivated and naturalised in the Middle East countries of Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria and Lebanon and in Ethiopia, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and Libya...

Genetic diversity among induced mutants of grasspea (Lathyrus sativus L.)

Introduction Knowledge about genetic diversity is a prerequisite of any breeding programme. Inclusion of diverse parents in hybridisation programmes serves the purpose of combining desirable genes in new recombinations. Mahalanobi’s D statistic (7) is a powerful tool in quantifying the degree of divergence at genotypic level. Several workers have used this method to quantify the degree of diver...

Electrophoretic phenotypes of different enzymes in some entries of Lathyrus sativus L

Introduction In Italy, grasspea (Lathyrus sativus L.) is one of the least common grain legumes. Today, it is not included in the official statistics of Italy and its survival is due to the praiseworthy action of a small number of farmers in very limited areas of peninsular and insular centralsouthern Italy. Since the Second World War the sharp reduction in cultivation, similarly for other grain...

Lathyrus cicera as quality feed for laying hens

Introduction Research at CLIMA has indicated that Lathyrus cicera and L. sativus (grasspea) have potential as grain legumes on 100 000 to 300 000 ha of neutral to alkaline soils in low-to-medium rainfall areas of southern Australia. They do not have serious disease problems and are envisaged as low maintenance/low cost crops for the purposes of green manure, managing herbicide resistant weeds, ...
